    The government has extended the state of national emergency in the city of Christchurch until March 31. The state of emergency was first declared Feb. 23 following the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the city Feb. 22.

    “There is still considerable work to be done before the state of national emergency can be lifted and recovery work passed on to the appropriate agency or agencies,” Civil Defense Minister John Carter said in a statement.
