No business as usual: Amina Mohamed on the green economy

The green economy gives less developed countries a chance to leapfrog over more industrialized ones, says Amina Mohamed, deputy executive director of the United Nations Environment Program.

    By Devex Editor // 30 October 2012

Whether you like the term or not, the green economy is growing, a top United Nations official told Devex - and it gives less developed countries a chance to leapfrog over more industrialized nations by avoiding “bad” and “entrenched habits.”

What type of assistance do these countries need to grow? We asked Amina Mohamed, deputy executive director of the United Nations Environment Program.

Mohamed spoke with Devex Editor Rolf Rosenkranz on the fringes of the 2012 European Development Days. Her message to aid agencies: “We don’t want business as usual.” Sustainable development goals must be integrated into all aid projects.

Watch the conversation between Rosenkranz and Mohamed on the requirements of developing countries to pursue sustainable development and what the aid community can do to address them, part of a series of conversations we video-taped with global development leaders in the center of the action at last week’s EDD.

Check out our complete coverage of European Development Days 2012.
