    Opinion: How do we fix global health financing? This review can help

    A review of four multilateral climate funds presents recommendations applicable to the largest global health funds.

    A recent review of four key climate funds offers a blueprint applicable to the global health financing landscape.

    In October 2024, Brazil’s G2 Presidency’s Sustainable Finance Working Group published a review of several vertical climate and environmental funds. Authored by independent experts, the report examined four major multilateral funds, offering actionable recommendations to streamline their operations and boost their ability to leverage additional public and private finance.

    As global health financing faces an unprecedented emergency — with unpredictable aid flows, declining public spending, and mounting debt pressures — the question arises: Can the lessons learned from climate funds help reshape the health financing landscape?

      Kalipso Chalkidou

      Kalipso Chalkidou is the director of the department of health financing and economics at the World Health Organization. Before that, she founded and led the department of health finance at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. She is a visiting professor of global health at Imperial College London’s School of Public Health. Before moving to Geneva, she was director of global health policy and a senior fellow at the Center for Global Development.
