    Opinion: To recruit humanitarian ‘champions,’ true partnership is key

    We have been joined by many champions such as actress Priyanka Chopra and Albania’s Edi Rama and learned many lessons from the ups and downs of identifying, cultivating, collaborating with champions, Sam Friedlander writes.

    What do an Indian actress, the prime minister of Albania, an officer in the Iraqi Ministry of Education, and the director of the United Nations humanitarian coordination division have in common?

    All are champions for young children in humanitarian contexts.

    But that championship didn’t just happen. Their interest in the issue and positioning as potential influencers was deliberately matched with support and opportunities for action by advocates working on the issue of early childhood development, or ECD. This collaboration — a key advocacy tactic — turned them from supporters on the sidelines to champions on the front lines.
