    Should donors consider hygiene over health care?

    Strengthening health systems has finally become a priority for donors after the Ebola outbreak. But what about hygiene? We spoke to the head of a U.S. nonprofit that distributes discarded hygiene products to developing countries.

    The Ebola outbreak has definitely gathered the attention of the largest multilateral and bilateral donors on strengthening health systems.

    However, as the international aid community steps up funding to bolster health care capacity, infrastructure and staff in West Africa, worries are emerging that other development sectors will take a back seat.

    One sector in danger of such a fate is hygiene, according to Shawn Seipler, executive director and co-founder of Clean the World, a U.S. nonprofit that collects and recycles discarded soap and shampoo products to distribute them to poor countries and thus help prevent deaths caused by hygiene-related illnesses.
