    Snobelen: Defund CIDA

By Ma. Rizza Leonzon // 28 February 2011

Toronto Sun columnist John Snobelen has harsh words for the Canadian International Development Agency following Canadian Minister of International Cooperation Beverley Oda’s admission that she ordered the modification of a memorandum to deny funding for church-based organization Kairos: Defund CIDA.

“[T]he real issue is why CIDA uses taxpayer dollars to fund lobbying,” Snobelen notes. “Kairos is in the advocacy business. They lobby government and others to promote their particular views on human rights and ecological integrity.”

He continues: “CIDA has been broken for years. Their recommendation to continue funding Kairos is an indication the government should do more than defund that particular grant. They should defund CIDA.”

Snobelen also called for Oda’s resignation, saying it was the “honorable” thing to do.
