    The World Bank's top 10 European contractors

    As part of an analysis of the World Bank’s European contractors, Devex identifies the top 10 suppliers from the region.

    Between 2017 and 2020, the World Bank hired over 1,900 European organizations. The top 10 European contractors received a total of $2.6 billion for 22 projects — almost 28% of the total contract value awarded to European groups during this period. As part of an analysis of the World Bank’s European contractors, Devex has identified the top 10 suppliers during this period, finding that the majority were from Turkey. The list only considers European groups and individual contractors, with joint ventures between European and non-European contractors excluded. 1. IC Ibrahim Cecen Yatirim Holding Headquarters: Ankara, Turkey Number of contracts won: 1 Total value of contract: $570 million Founded in 1969, IC Holding’s portfolio includes construction, energy, and infrastructure projects, among others. It received $570 million in 2019 for design, supply, and installation services for the Tuz Golu Underground Storage Expansion Facility — a civil work contract under the Gas Storage Expansion Project. 2. Onur Group Headquarters: Ankara, Turkey Number of contracts won: 7 Total value of contracts: $524 million In the 2017-2020 period, Onur Group received seven contracts for two transport projects in Ukraine: four contracts totaling $199 million under the Second Road and Safety Improvement Project and three contracts totaling $325 million under the Road Sector Development Project. 3. Limak Construction Headquarters: Ankara, Turkey Number of contracts: 2 Total value of contracts: $398 million Limak Construction was awarded $369 million for the rehabilitation and expansion of Cairo International Airport in Egypt in 2016. Three years later, it won $29 million for the construction of a road segment under the Trans-Hindukush Road Connectivity Project in Afghanistan. 4. Nurol Holding and Ozaltin Holding Headquarters: Ankara, Turkey Number of contracts: 1 Total value of contract: $192 million Nurol and Ozaltin — the only joint venture to make the list — were awarded $192 million in 2018 for the construction of the Bisri Dam in Lebanon. 5. Budimex Headquarters: Warsaw, Poland Number of contracts: 3 Total value of contracts: $186 million Budimex was hired for three World Bank projects in Poland, with the biggest one worth $126 million, awarded in 2017, for the construction of Racibórz Dolny flood protection reservoir. 6. Mota-Engil Headquarters: Porto, Portugal Number of contracts won: 3 Total value of contracts: $175 million Mota-Engil has been providing energy, construction, infrastructure, and engineering services across Europe, Latin America, and Africa since 1946. In 2017, it was awarded $8.5 million for the rehabilitation and maintenance of roads and bridges in Mozambique. And in 2019, it was awarded two contracts totaling $167 million for the management of Uganda’s northeastern road corridor. 7. Thales España Headquarters: Madrid Number of contracts won: 1 Total value of contract: $148 million Thales España received a contract for a railway restructuring project in Egypt in 2018, which was worth $148 million. Its parent company, Thales Group, has also worked with the African Development Bank, European Investment Bank, Global Affairs Canada, and the U.K. Foreign & Commonwealth Office, among other multilateral banks and donor agencies. 8. Astaldi Headquarters: Rome Number of contracts won: 1 Total value of contract: $148 million Astaldi was awarded a $148 million contract in Georgia for the construction of the East-West Highway Corridor in fiscal year 2018. It has also worked on hydraulic and railway projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Morocco, Algeria, and Indonesia. 9. SBI International Holdings AG Headquarters: Schaffhausen, Switzerland Number of contracts won: 2 Total value of contracts: $145 million The international implementation arm of Shikun & Binui, SBI International Holdings AG won two transportation contracts in East Africa: $135 million for the design and construction of the Hawassa Highway in Ethiopia and $9.6 million for a road and bridges project in Mozambique. It also has contracts with AfDB. 10. INSO SPA Headquarters: Florence, Italy Number of contracts won: 1 Total value of contract: $133 million Under the Hospital Resiliency and Preparedness Project in Sint Maarten, INSO was awarded a $133 million contract in 2019.
