Unless assistance is scaled up, food and water shortage in East Africa could worsen, British aid groups said Wednesday (April 27).
The current drought in the region has already left more than 8 million people hungry and the number could rise if aid is not increased, according to the Consortium of British Humanitarian Agencies, hosted by Save the Children.
“The current drought has the potential to be as devastating as that of 2009 if appropriate action is not taken immediately,” the consortium said in a statement, as reported by Reuters.
More than 20 million people in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Uganda and Eritrea suffered from life-threatening food and water scarcity in 2009 due to consecutive years of drought, according to the consortium.
