The U.K. government is to cut at least £85 million ($108.5 million) of funding from its international climate programs, just days after it was announced that July 2023 is set to be the hottest month on record.
The three programs, which are being slashed by half, cover key areas of U.K. international climate policy, according to an impact assessment of aid budget cuts made public by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
“The cuts would represent a further dereliction of U.K. leadership on climate and development at a time when leadership is sorely needed in the world,” said Edward Davey, the head of World Resources Institute U.K. “We hope the U.K. will reconsider and that it will take every step to honour its commitments to the poorest and to bold climate action, at home and in the world.”
