Margareta Wahlstrom, the United Nations chief on disaster risk reduction, has urged donors to put at least a tenth of the Haiti rebuilding aid toward disaster risk mitigation, The Associated Press reports.
The U.N. International Strategy for Disaster Reduction blamed earthquakes for 60 percent of disaster-related deaths, while storms have caused 22 percent of those cases.
Wahlstrom said Haiti would have had adequately trained hospital staff and sufficient medical equipment had it been prepared for the Jan. 12 earthquake.
