    UN leader makes unprecedented demand to ban fossil fuel advertising

    This is the first time a U.N. leader has targeted the advertising industry specifically in the climate arena.

    United Nations chief António Guterres has urged countries to ban fossil fuel advertising, in what the U.N. calls a “moment of truth” speech in New York City.

    The U.N. secretary-general’s demand, delivered Wednesday at a press conference to mark World Environment Day at the American Museum of Natural History, is the first time the U.N. leader has targeted the advertising industry specifically when it comes to climate.

    In doing so, Guterres hopes governments and private companies will approach the issue similarly to how countries have legislated the tobacco industry advertising.
