USAID warns against striking as labor dispute roils health bureau

Staffers inside the U.S. Agency for International Development's Bureau for Global Health organized a coordinated "sickout" to protest a contracting transition that has caused major disruption.

    By Michael Igoe // 16 December 2022

The U.S. Agency for International Development has warned staffers not to participate in organized strikes or work stoppages in the midst of a workforce dispute that has caused major disruption inside the agency’s Bureau for Global Health.

In a series of emails sent last week and obtained by Devex, USAID’s lawyers and leadership delivered a combination of threats to take disciplinary action and messages of understanding to the agency’s staff.

The latest exchange comes as contractors inside the Bureau for Global Health, or GH bureau, continue to raise concerns about the agency’s handling of a transition of their employment from one contracting firm to another — a dispute that has persisted since it was first reported by Devex last month.
