    Who’s still hiring in Europe?

    The leading multilateral institutions and international NGOs still hiring in Europe after the U.S. foreign aid cuts.

    The Trump administration’s policies continue to impact U.S. foreign aid and have created ripples that extend beyond Washington, D.C. The global development landscape is shifting, and for professionals in the field, there is also a shift in employment opportunities. In Europe, there have been moves of budgetary cuts and shifts of development funding, even before U.S. President Donald Trump’s reelection. Despite these, some Europe-based organizations are still creating new avenues for professionals dedicated to global impact. Notable United Nations agencies and multilateral development banks, or MDBs with headquarters in Europe, such as UNOPS and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, are currently listing a variety of job openings. UNICEF also has several exciting consultancy roles based within its divisions in Geneva, Switzerland. Leading NGOs, such as Médecins Sans Frontières and the public research center London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, also have several opportunities available. As we continue to explore the top organizations that are still hiring after the Trump administration’s foreign aid cuts, we now delve into the key global development organizations that are actively recruiting in Western and Central Europe. UNOPS Headquarters: Copenhagen, Denmark Year founded: 1973 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 123 UNOPS is the United Nations agency that works directly with communities to provide expert project management, infrastructure, and procurement services. It delivers practical solutions and implements development projects that transform communities across the world. European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Headquarters: London, United Kingdom Year founded: 1991 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 101 EBRD supports private sector development, sustainable infrastructure, and regional connectivity. Initially focused on Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Mediterranean, EBRD recently expanded to sub-Saharan African countries to foster private sector development in the region. Food and Agriculture Organization Headquarters: Rome, Italy Year founded: 1945 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 96 FAO is the leading U.N. agency that improves farming, strengthens food systems, and ensures no one goes hungry. Despite the significant slash of USAID funding, FAO continues to cultivate a secure and sustainable food future for all. UNICEF Headquarters: New York, United States Year founded: 1946 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 87 UNICEF is the U.N. specialized agency protecting vulnerable children and adolescents around the world. Its key European offices and divisions, located in Geneva, Florence, Stockholm, and Copenhagen, play crucial roles in areas such as research, supply operations, innovation, and partnerships. While its headquarters is in Nairobi, UNEP has a significant presence in Europe, with offices in France, where its Division of Technology, Industry and Economics, or DTIE, is located, and Switzerland, where the regional UNEP office in Europe is located. European Commission Headquarters: Brussels, Belgium Year founded: 1958 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 63 The European Commission is the European Union’s executive body responsible for proposing legislation and implementing decisions of the European Parliament and European Council. The jobs posted on Devex are the ones from the Directorate-General for International Partnerships, or DG-INTPA, and also the ones under the European External Action Service, or EEAS, the arm that focuses on diplomatic relations across the globe. Overall, the commission had several openings for prosecutors, administrative assistants, and officers who would help carry out its day-to-day operations in its headquarters in Belgium. Médecins Sans Frontières Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland Year founded: 1971 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 101 Médecins Sans Frontiéres, also known as Doctors Without Borders, is an international medical humanitarian organization that provides critical medical care in emergency and fragile settings. Aside from its headquarters in Geneva, MSF also has several openings in Brussels, where its Operational Centre is located, and across France, where MSF is working to assist migrants, asylum-seekers, and refugees. Belgian Red Cross Headquarters: Brussels, Belgium Year founded: 1864 Total jobs posted since Jan. 24: 79 The Belgian Red Cross, officially known as the Croix-Rouge de Belgique, provides emergency and disaster relief.
