Who's who in #globaldev: April 2020 appointments
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala now serves as special envoy for two coronavirus-related initiatives.
By Jenny Lei Ravelo // 11 May 2020African Union The African Union has appointed four special envoys to help mobilize economic support for African countries affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The envoys are: — Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former finance minister of Nigeria. — Donald Kaberuka, former president of the African Development Bank. — Tidjane Thiam, former CEO of both Credit Suisse and Prudential. — Trevor Manuel, former finance minister of South Africa. Okonjo-Iweala is also a special envoy for the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator, or ACT Accelerator, which is led by the World Health Organization. She is joined by Sir Andrew Witty, president of UnitedHealth Group and CEO of Optum. Witty has taken a leave of absence from UnitedHealth Group while co-leading the initiative. The Rockefeller Foundation Jonathan Quick is the new managing director for pandemic response, preparedness, and prevention at The Rockefeller Foundation. Quick served as director of essential medicines at WHO, and he was the president and CEO of global health nonprofit Management Sciences for Health from 2004 to 2017. He is senior fellow emeritus at MSH, and adjunct professor at Duke Global Health Institute. CARE International Sofia Sprechmann Sineiro is CARE International’s new secretary-general. She starts in her new role on June 1. She takes over from Lindsay Glassco, interim secretary-general. Glassco has been appointed the new president and CEO of Plan International Canada and officially takes over the position on July 1. Sprechmann Sineiro has been with CARE since 1994 and served in various roles, including senior programmatic positions. Currently, she is international program director at CARE International. IDinsight Ruth Levine is the new CEO of IDinsight, a data analytics, research, and advisory organization focused on social impact. She previously served as program director of the global development and population program at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Levine has also worked as deputy assistant administrator in the Bureau for Policy, Planning and Learning at the U.S. Agency for International Development and led the Center for Global Development’s global health policy program. ACDI/VOCA ACDI/VOCA has three new members on its board of directors: Chris Cochran, former executive director of nonprofit ReFED; Enoh Ebong, head of strategic partnerships at Milken Institute’s Center for Advancing the American Dream; and Leslie Durschinger, founder and CEO of Terra Global Capital. The three new members have expertise on food systems, strategic partnerships, and sustainable agriculture. ONE Campaign Najat Vallaud-Belkacem is ONE Campaign’s new France director. She previously served as France’s minister of women’s rights and minister of national education, higher education, and research. She is currently chair of the strategic board of the Tent Partnership for Refugees Foundation. Cadasta Foundation Cadasta Foundation has appointed Steven Weir as a new director of its board. Weir is currently vice president of housing innovation at Habitat for Humanity International. The Finance Innovation Lab The Finance Innovation Lab’s new CEO is Jesse Griffiths. He joins the organization after serving as director of the development strategy and finance program at Overseas Development Institute.
