By Jenny Lei Ravelo // 18 December 2017UNAIDS Gunilla Carlsson is UNAIDS new deputy executive director for management and governance. She currently serves as senior advisor to the African Development Bank and vice chair in the board of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibé said of Carlsson: “Gunilla Carlsson is known for her dynamic leadership and deep knowledge of the issues … She is not a business-as-usual leader.” During her time as Sweden’s minister for international development cooperation from 2006 to 2013, Carlsson introduced reforms in Sweden’s foreign aid program, including at SIDA, to promote cost efficiencies, address corruption, and boost the profile of the government’s development cooperation work. Carlsson will assume the role in early 2018. She succeeds Jan Beagle, who now serves as U.N. undersecretary general for management. International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations Greg Perry, the current executive director of the Medicines Patent Pool, will take on new responsibilities in Feb. 2018 as part of the leadership team at the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations. Perry will be assistant director general at IFPMA, with a focus on the federation’s “external outreach and stakeholder engagement in global health topics, including innovation, access, and the international regulatory environment,” according to a news release sent to Devex. He will be working alongside Thomas Cueni, IFPMA’s new director general, and Co-Assistant Director General Fumie Griego, whose focus is on value and access, vaccines, antimicrobial resistance, and ethics and business integrity. “I have worked in a range of roles in the healthcare arena during the course of my career, but universal health care has been at the core of all of them. I very much look forward to joining the strengthened IFPMA leadership team and bringing solutions from another perspective,” Perry, who previously served as director general of the European Generic Medicines Association, said of the announcement. Save the Children Action Network Save the Children’s advocacy arm has a new president: Kris Perry, currently executive director of the First Five Years Fund. Prior to the appointment, Perry was a SCAN board member. Mark Shriver, the network’s current president, will be taking over the role of chief executive officer of SCAN, while continuing to be Save the Children’s senior vice president for the organization’s U.S. programs and advocacy. He will also “continue to set and guide the overall strategy for SCAN,” according to a news release. “SCAN’s unique influence and advocacy, from state houses to the halls of Congress in Washington, are particularly invaluable at a time when politics and partisanship seem to be neglecting the needs and best interests of at-risk families,” Perry said in a statement. “I look forward to helping SCAN’s noble work to make candidates’ and lawmakers’ support for young children a deciding issue when voters cast their ballots in 2018, 2020 and beyond.” NewCities Foundation Sébastien Turbot has assumed his new role as executive director of the NewCities Foundation, an international nonprofit that works with a wide array of stakeholders to explore and promote innovations aimed at improving life in the cities. He will oversee all of the foundation’s operations and projects, according to a news release. Prior to the new role, Turbot was executive director and global head of content at Auditoire/TBWA in Paris, a global brand experience agency. Previously he was also editor-in-chief of TEDxParis and curator of the annual World Innovation Summit for Education. “I am delighted to welcome Sébastien as our new Executive Director. His appointment sets the stage for a renewed period of strong growth for NewCities,” said John Rossant, chairman of the foundation. “I look forward to working with him to re-energize the Foundation, especially at this time when so many of the important challenges we face in our societies are being met by cities and regions.” Devex delivers cutting-edge insights and analysis to the leaders shaping and innovating the business of development.
