World Bank safeguards: Coming to a chat room near you!

The World Bank's consultation process on a new environmental and social safeguards policy has drawn criticism from some aid watchers. The world's largest multilateral development bank will take online suggestions for the policy change Wednesday morning.

    By Molly Anders // 04 February 2015
The World Bank is hosting a live chat Wednesday, calling for public input on its draft policies designed to protect the environment and local communities affected by its projects worldwide. A source of concern for many activists and civil society organizations, the current safeguards draft has been criticized for decreasing the bank’s accountability in its projects and lowering standards for enforcement in its environmental policies, among other issues. The safeguards have been the topic of consultations around the world in recent months as bank experts met with key stakeholders about how to improve the draft and how to instill in the safeguards the bank’s chief goals: ending extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity. Now the bank is taking its public input process online. A live chat version of those consultations will take place at 9 a.m. Eastern time; the bank is inviting all interested stakeholders to weigh in on the draft. The conversation should tackle the bank’s views on sustainability, gender and sexual discrimination, governance and transparency, among others. Read more about the safeguards debate here.
