About

Their Mission

Reduce infant mortality and improve health and living conditions in low-income countries, by accelerating availability of new affordable life-saving vaccines to eliminate neglected infectious diseases and by training local health workers, thereby reducing  poverty.

The Fondazione Achille Sclavo, the only Foundation with this Mission in Europe, is a philanthropic, fully tax-exempt, non-profit organization carrying out scientific research in support of the underprivileged. Its aim is to provide new, effective vaccines not yet available at reasonable prices to disadvantaged populations in developing countries burdened by endemic infectious diseases and poverty.

Their objectives

The objectives of the Fondazione Achille Sclavo are:

  1. Contribute to the achievement of the UN SustainableDevelopment Goal #3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being at all ages
  2. Globally eliminate diseases caused by Salmonella
  3. Train doctors and paramedic personnel from LMICs
  4. Contribute to the elimination of other neglected infectious diseases contributing to under 5yr. deaths in poor countries, like meningitis and shigellosis.

Little to no money has been invested to eliminate these diseases in Low and Middle Income Countries. Effective vaccines have been found and successfully tested in preclinical and clinical studies, and there is every indication that they would work and be available at a cost sustainable by international organizations. All that is needed is to forward them, completing all the necessary clinical studies and industrializing the production processes, possibly in developing countries, to contain costs.

The Fondazione, through partnering in Italy and abroad is :

  • identifying candidate vaccines which have the greatest probability of success and specificity for developing countries in order to fight those diseases which cause millions of childhood deaths,
  • gathering the funds necessary to finance rapid development of the vaccine candidates and prepare solid scientific plans,
  • initiating partnerships with a “collective impact” where common objectives, shared strategies and predetermined controls allow overall management of the variables which contribute to the success of vaccination campaigns,
  •  supporting local authorities and international organizations responsible for vaccinations in developing countries by training experts in immunizations.
