Pump Aid
About

Pump Aid is a UK registered international non-governmental organisation that's core purpose is the delivery of affordable, appropriate and sustainable technologies to meet the water and sanitation needs of rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa.

Currently many rural communities are forced to drink water from rivers, lakes and open, unprotected wells, where the water is left vulnerable to contamination from waterborne diseases and is often many kilometres from home. Pump Aid strives to help rural communities access clean water, which exists as little as 2-3 metres underground in some areas. Since 1998 Pump Aid has worked in Zimbabwe, Liberia and Malawi to deliver over 9,500 Elephant Pump water projects, transforming the lives of more than 1.35 million people.

Pump Aid has technical expertise in well digging and deepening, sustainability, construction and installation of low-cost hand pump called Elephant Pump and training of beneficiaries in pump installation, maintenance and repair. Alongside the technical expertise Pump Aid also has over 19 years experience working with corporate partners. The impact they have on the ground is significant and sustainable so brands know that by supporting Pump Aid they are leaving a legacy they can be proud of.

Since 1998, Pump Aid has been working in Africa and is committed to achieving lasting positive change in people’s lives by improving the quality, availability and use of water with communities in need. As a small but agile organisation teams in London and Lilongwe are committed to achieving the mission: to improve the availability and use of safe, protected water for the most vulnerable communities in Malawi and beyond.

Their mission is to achieve lasting positive change in poor and rural communities by improving the quality, availability and use of water.

Pump Aid has been recognised with a number of awards, including the Pan-African Award for Entrepreneurship in Education 2012 from Teach a Man to Fish and the Saville Foundation, the St Andrews Prize for the Environment and the World Bank Development Marketplace Award for Development Innovations 2008.

With major funding from the UK Department for International Development, UNICEF and other donors, including Thirsty Planet, they are reaching greater numbers of people, going beyond water to provide critically related services including sanitation and hygiene training, and developing self-supply programmes.
