SOS SAHEL was founded in 1976 in Dakar, Senegal, on the initiative of Léopold Sédar Senghor, then the President of Senegal. It was founded in response to the aftermath of the great Sahelian drought of 1973-1974.
Almost 40 years after its creation, the African grassroots organization SOS SAHEL improves the food security of rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa.
MISSION
SOS SAHEL, an international, African-founded nonprofit organization, aims to improve the food security of rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa, an undertaking that began nearly 40 years ago.
The Sahel region is one of the poorest and most environmentally challenged on Earth. Today frequent and severe shocks, like climatic variations – including droughts and irregular rainfalls – limit the livelihoods opportunities available to local populations, especially the rural and most isolated ones.
With a demographic expansion expected in the next decades, and an increasing loss in soil fertility, the future promises to bring even more challenges.
SOS SAHEL’s mission is to improve food, nutrition and living security for local communities in Africa.
