I am a Medical Doctor specialized in Health Management, Planning and Policy for developing countries. In 20 years, worked in all levels of the health care spectrum: from local to international/global levels, from public to private sectors and from fund donors to fund recipients. Since 2007 I managed the health care system of a leading mining company of Bolivia which provides health care services to workers and their immediate family group. Funded with the company´s mandatory contributions to the national social security administration, a unique mechanism developed because of the company´s rural location allows the company to manage its own contributions. The result is a ´tailor-made´ system that provides primary care in the mining camps/villages and purchases secondary and tertiary health care services to private providers in major cities, through a referral/counter referral mechanism boosted by adequate patient transportation and communication means.
