Functional responsibilities
Under the guidance of the Head of Communications and in close collaboration with the SMS Director, the Head of Partnerships, Financing, and Network Relations, and the MEAL/KM Advisor, the Advocacy Advisor will lead efforts to advance the SUN Movement’s advocacy priorities. This includes the design and support the implementation of a 2025 advocacy campaign marking the transition to SUN 4.0, fostering broad engagement across the Movement, and identifying key campaign partners.
2025 Advocacy Campaign Development and Implementation
Design and support the implementation of a global advocacy campaign positioning 2025 as a pivotal transition year for the SUN Movement toward SUN 4.0.
Develop a clear and compelling campaign narrative to generate buy-in from stakeholders across SUN Networks and partners.
Identify and engage strategic campaign partners, including governments, civil society, businesses, and donors, to amplify the campaign’s reach and impact.
Integrate campaign messaging with the broader SUN Movement communications strategy.
Advocacy Strategy and Opportunities
Identify key advocacy opportunities in 2025 to increase the visibility of nutrition issues and influence decision-makers, donors, and high-impact stakeholders.
Align advocacy initiatives with major global events, such as the Nutrition for Growth (N4G), World Health Assembly, G7, G20, UNFSS +4, COP30 and the SUN Global Gathering.
Stakeholder Engagement and Relationship Building
Provide expert support on fostering and maintaining strong relationships with advocacy networks, key influencers, and partners to mobilize support for SUN 4.0 priorities.
Advise the Head of Communication on promotion of collaboration among SUN Networks and leverage partnerships to enhance advocacy efforts at global, regional, and country levels.
Work closely with the Knowledge Management and MEAL team to integrate lessons learned and best practices from SUN countries into advocacy efforts.
Advocacy Messaging and Material Development
Provide expertise in advocacy, coalition-building, and multilateral political negotiation.
Develop and review talking points, publications, and advocacy materials tailored to different audiences.
Collaborate with the Head of Communications to ensure alignment between advocacy messaging and overall communications strategies.
Advancing Nutrition Goals
Advocate for the inclusion of nutrition as a central component of broader development initiatives, linking it to climate, health, education, and food systems agendas.
Catalyze partnerships and increase investments in nutrition to drive results in SUN countries, aligned with WHA and SDG targets.
Monitoring and Reporting
Monitor the progress of advocacy efforts and campaigns, ensuring alignment with defined goals and objectives.
Provide regular reports and updates to internal and external stakeholders on advocacy initiatives and their impact
A comprehensive advocacy campaign strategy for 2025, including key messaging, stakeholder engagement plans, and implementation timelines.
Regular progress updates on campaign activities, including metrics on stakeholder engagement and campaign reach.
Advocacy materials and resources aligned with SUN 4.0 priorities.
Strengthened relationships with partners and networks supporting the 2025 advocacy campaign.
Reports on the outcomes and impact of advocacy efforts at major global events.
The effective and successful achievement of results will support the SUN Movement and its Secretariat to achieve its vision of a world free from malnutrition in all its forms by 2030.
Education/Experience/Language requirements
Education:
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in nutrition, public health, international development, social sciences, communication or journalism or related field is required.
A bachelor’s degree with a combination of two additional years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the Master’s degree
Experience:
A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in communication and advocacy in the context of international development is required.
Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing advocacy plans in support of overall global objectives is required.
Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information into clear and concise reports are required
Full working knowledge of English is essential.
Knowledge of another official UNOPS language, particularly French or Spanish, is an asset.
