Job Description

Intern – CITES Science Unit, UNEP, Geneva

Work Location

  • Geneva

Expected Duration

  • 6 months

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with conducting research and analyses related to the implementation of specific Conference of the Parties (CoP) Decisions and Resolutions allocated to the Science Unit
  • Conduct background research for the preparation of substantive meeting documents
  • Compile and prepare analyses of information submitted by Parties in response to various calls for information regarding their implementation of the Convention
  • Assist in updating the CITES website pages related to the work of the Science Unit
  • Support the planning and organization of meetings, workshops (online and in-person), and side events
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to undertake independent research, compile and analyze scientific and policy data, and synthesize findings clearly
  • Strong writing skills
  • Strong interest in working at the science-policy interface
  • Knowledge of CITES or similar organizations is desirable
  • Fluency in English is required; fluency in French or Spanish is desirable
  • Academic qualifications in a relevant scientific field, such as natural sciences, conservation biology, ecology, wildlife/fisheries/forestry management, environmental or political sciences
  • Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree (minimum bachelor’s or equivalent)
    • Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher)
    • Already graduated with a university degree

Languages

  • Fluency in English is required
  • Knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable

  • Internship is unpaid; all costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions
  • Interns not citizens or permanent residents of the host country may require appropriate visa and work/employment authorization
