Job Description

Work Location

  • Geneva, Switzerland

Expected Duration

  • 3 months, renewable (up to 6 months with supervisor approval)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support OHCHR in fulfilling its mission to protect human rights, empower people to realize their rights, and assist authorities in implementing human rights.
  • Assist in the legal analysis of information collected and preserved by investigative bodies and OHCHR.
  • Conduct legal research on international law, including:
    • International humanitarian law
    • International human rights law
    • International criminal law
  • Assist in drafting:
    • Note verbales
    • Responses to requests for assistance
    • Requests for information
  • Attend meetings of the AJC Section on accountability and judicial cooperation matters.
  • Perform other related duties as requested by the supervisor.
  • Work in close coordination with all sections in the Human Rights Inquiries Branch (HRIB), including:
    • Inquiry Support Section
    • Information System and Digital Support Section
    • Administrative Support Unit

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (Master’s degree or equivalent, or higher) in:
    • Law
    • Human rights
    • International relations
    • Social sciences
    • Related fields
  • Alternatively, applicants with a completed university degree as defined above are eligible.
  • No professional work experience is required.
  • Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the UN Charter.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Languages

  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language (French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, or Spanish) is an advantage.
