Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Office of the Special Coordinator on improving United Nations Response to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (OSCSEA) works across UN offices, departments, and agencies to strengthen the UN response to sexual exploitation and abuse globally.
  • Coordinates system-wide efforts to align approaches, enhance cooperation, and develop standardized mechanisms, procedures, protocols, and tools.
  • Supports the Secretary-General and UN leadership, as well as other implementing partners, in peacekeeping, humanitarian, development, and human rights sectors.
  • Responsibilities of the Communications Intern include:
    • Conduct research on issues related to the prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse, including media monitoring, data collection, and analysis.
    • Support the implementation of internal and external communications strategies.
    • Support the production of multimedia content, including photos, videos, social media cards, and copy.
    • Assist in drafting, updating, and maintaining presentations and other communications materials.
    • Undertake other responsibilities as required.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in or completed a graduate school program (second university degree or higher).
    • Enrolled in or completed the final year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • No prior work experience is required.
  • Must have training, education, coursework, or skills beneficial to the UN.
  • Must be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, demonstrating tolerance and understanding.

Languages

  • Fluency in English (required).
  • Knowledge of French (desirable).
  • Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.

Additional Information / Intern Specifics

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN.
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
  • Interns who are not US citizens or permanent residents may require a G4 visa or other appropriate visa/employment authorization (e.g., CPT/OPT).
  • Successful candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting the internship.
