Duties and Responsibilities

  • This position is located in the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea (GARS) team of the Global Maritime Crime Programme, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Nairobi.
  • The internship is UNPAID and full-time, 5 days per week (40 hours).
  • Work under the direct supervision of the Professional staff of the Global Maritime Crime Programme.
  • Contribute to the preparation of background documents, presentations, summaries, talking points, and speeches.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events, and conferences.
  • Attend and take notes at meetings.
  • Assist in translating documents and material from Somali to English and vice versa.
  • Perform other tasks as necessary.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in, or recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher).
    • Enrolled in, or recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree).
    • Graduated with a university degree (official proof must be attached to the application).
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Teams).
  • Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Field of study closely related to the type of internship applied for is required.
  • Applicants must cover costs for travel, visa, accommodation, health insurance, and living expenses.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the host country may need appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
