Work Location

  • Hybrid (a few days per week in-person in New York, USA, and a few days per week remote)

Expected Duration

  • 3 to 6 months
  • Desired start date is 15 September 2025, or sooner

Duties and Responsibilities

Office Background

  • The Digital Enablement Team (DET) drives the implementation of the Strategy for Digital Transformation of UN Peacekeeping (DTS), using technology to enhance peacekeepers’ safety and improve mandate implementation.
  • The Department of Peace Operations (DPO) provides political and executive direction to UN peacekeeping operations globally and maintains contact with the Security Council, troop and financial contributors, and parties to conflicts.
  • DPO integrates efforts of UN, governmental, and nongovernmental entities in peacekeeping contexts and provides guidance on military, police, rule of law, mine action, and related issues for other UN political and peacebuilding missions.
  • This role is based in the Digital Enablement Team (DET) within the Office for Coordination and Shared Services (OCSS), Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Department of Peace Operations Shared Structure (DPPA-DPO-SS).
  • The internship is unpaid and full-time (35 hours/week). Interns are supervised by staff and expected to work in office at least three days per week, following UNHQ-NY hybrid policies.
  • After the first 3 months full-time in-person, there is a possibility to adjust to part-time (20 hours/week) and/or remote work depending on office needs and intern preference.

Responsibilities

  • Engage partners to facilitate discussions on data-related objectives, use case challenges, and data governance.
  • Assist in developing presentations on data-related topics such as toolkits for data collection or use of digital tools.
  • Support identifying, documenting, and developing automated workflows (e.g., with PowerAutomate).
  • Develop surveys, prototype tools, provide analysis, and generate outcome reports.
  • Support creation of data flows and pipelines for streamlined access and analysis.
  • Assist in conducting analysis for reports, analytical papers, policy briefs, and factsheets.
  • Help develop data visualizations for analysis and communication.
  • Support data aggregation and development of interactive analytic reports.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Open to broad educational backgrounds; beneficial fields include computer science, analytics, statistics, information management, business analysis, or related fields.
  • Skills in identifying and documenting workflows.
  • Skills in data management, data visualization, and data cleaning.
  • Conceptual knowledge of data ETL, data governance, and promoting data literacy.
  • Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or higher), or
    • Enrolled in final academic year of first university degree (minimum Bachelor’s), or
    • Have graduated with a university degree as defined above.
  • Must be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Demonstrated keen interest in the UN and commitment to the Charter’s ideals.
  • Ability to successfully interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, including willingness to understand and tolerate differing views.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
  • The official UN languages include Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish.

Intern Specific Text

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN.
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country of internship may require appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
