Job Description

Work Location

  • Geneva, Switzerland (in-person internship)

Expected Duration

  • 6 months

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on substantive areas of work of the Environment and Climate Change Unit.
  • Support the drafting of materials including reports, publications, newsletters, and briefings.
  • Assist in organizing events related to the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment.
  • Follow and support OHCHR engagement in meetings, consultations, briefings, webinars, Multilateral Environmental Agreements, COPs, and the Human Rights Council.
  • Monitor the latest scientific evidence and developments related to environmental crises, nuclear legacies, and their human rights impacts.
  • Support coordination with and dissemination of information to OHCHR colleagues and partners.
  • Assist in the preparation of Human Rights Council mandated activities.
  • Support efforts to strengthen OHCHR work to advance the right to a healthy environment at the regional and country level.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Enrolled in, or completed, a graduate school program in Law, International Relations, Political Science, Development, or related subject (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), or
  • Enrolled in, or completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program in Law, International Relations, Political Science, Development, or related subject (minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Knowledge in human rights and/or environmental fields is desirable.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an advantage.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the host country may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
  • Successful candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
