Duties and Responsibilities

  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, setting the global environmental agenda, promoting coherent implementation of sustainable development within the UN system, and advocating for the global environment.
  • The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) regulates international trade in about 36,000 species listed in its Appendices.
  • CITES Parties require adequate national legislation and designated Management and Scientific authorities to ensure legal, sustainable, and traceable international wildlife trade.
  • The CITES Secretariat supports Parties in implementing the Convention and related Resolutions and Decisions, organizing annual meetings of permanent committees, and smaller ad hoc workshops.
  • Internships are a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months, full-time (35-40 hours/week), under supervision of a staff member.
  • Internships are UNPAID.

Intern Responsibilities (under the supervision of the Chief of the CITES Outreach and Projects Unit):

  • Draft content for social media and website.
  • Support web and digital communications.
  • Assist with photo and video editing and production.
  • Design outreach materials (e.g., factsheets, presentations).
  • Create branded templates (e.g., PowerPoint presentations, factsheets).
  • Organize and maintain internal storage for CITES multimedia assets (images, videos, graphics).
  • Support campaign and key meetings’ communication planning and implementation.
  • Monitor and report on social media engagement and website traffic.
  • Compile monthly or quarterly communications summaries.
  • Assist with other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Experience with graphic design software (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar).
  • Knowledge of website content management systems (e.g., Drupal) is desirable.
  • Fluency in English is required; fluency in French or Spanish is desirable.

Applicant Eligibility

  • Must meet one of the following at the time of application:
    • Enrolled in the final year of a first university degree program (bachelor’s or equivalent).
    • Enrolled in a graduate program (master’s or equivalent or higher).
    • Graduated with a university degree.
  • Academic background or experience in communication, visual arts, environmental science, or other relevant fields (including social media, web development/management).
  • Excellent writing skills in English.
  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience but must have a field of study closely related to the internship.

Languages

  • English and French are UN working languages.
  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable.
  • “Fluency” = fluent in reading, writing, speaking, understanding.
  • “Knowledge of” = confident in two of the four areas.
