Job Description

Work Location

  • United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, Palais des Nations, Geneva

Expected Duration

  • 3 months: from 1 October to 31 December 2025

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the preparation of capacity-building activities and projects under the Convention’s Assistance and Cooperation Programme, as well as seminars and workshops organized or co-organized by the secretariat.
  • Prepare draft presentations, inputs for reports, documents, and project proposals on matters related to industrial accident prevention, preparedness, and response.
  • Support the organization, preparation, and follow-up of meetings of the Convention’s subsidiary bodies, including the Bureau, Working Group on Implementation, and expert groups.
  • Conduct research on various environmental topics, including industrial safety, land-use planning, and mine tailings safety.
  • Identify and promote linkages between the Industrial Accidents Convention, the SDGs, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
  • Prepare content for the Industrial Accidents Convention web-page, propose improvements for user-friendliness, and develop new elements or texts as needed.
  • Prepare communication products, such as brochures, flyers, articles, and social media posts.
  • Support the preparation of press releases, articles, web stories, informal meeting minutes, and other materials as required.
  • Proofread and verify publications and informal documents to ensure correct terminology, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
    • Enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
    • Enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Computer literacy in standard software applications.
  • Relevant academic background in environmental studies, economics, international relations, international law, social or political studies, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact successfully with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including tolerance of differing opinions and views.

  • No professional work experience required.

Languages

  • Fluency in English required.
  • Working knowledge of French and/or Russian is an asset.
  • Notes: “Fluency” = proficient in all four areas (speak, read, write, understand); “Working knowledge” = confident in two of four areas.

  • Internship is strictly for the purpose of an internship with UNECE.
  • Interns are type I gratis personnel: not staff members and not financially remunerated.
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns work five days per week.
  • Interns are ineligible to apply for or be appointed to any UN Secretariat post for six months following the end of their internship.
  • Interns must provide proof of valid medical insurance and a medical certificate of good health.
  • Family restrictions: children or siblings of staff members are not eligible; other family relationships may be considered with conditions.
  • Candidates must meet Article 101, paragraph 3, of the UN Charter and standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity.
  • Interns may need to obtain appropriate visas and work/employment authorizations depending on country of internship.
