Job Description

Work Location

  • Geneva – Internship is designed to be full-time and in-person.
  • Modality can be adjusted based on the needs of the successful candidate.

Expected Duration

  • Full-time for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months.
  • Expected start date: 1 Oct 2025.
  • Start date, duration, and modality (in-person or hybrid) can be adjusted upon request of the successful candidate.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Located in the Right to Development Section (RTDS), Development and Economic and Social Issues Branch (DESIB), Thematic Engagement, Special Procedures and Right to Development Division (TESPRDD) of OHCHR.
  • Reports to a Human Rights Officer.
  • Supports the Human Rights Officer in implementing the mandate of the Secretary-General and High Commissioner on the realization of the right to development.
  • Tasks may include:
    • Conduct research and analysis on topics related to the right to development (e.g., international cooperation, trade and investment, development finance).
    • Prepare for and service meetings, seminars, and workshops: compile background materials, draft presentations, meeting notes, and summaries; research and invite speakers and participants.
    • Support annual and periodic events, including:
      • Annual session of the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Right to Development.
      • Two annual sessions of the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development.
      • Annual Human Rights Council Social Forum.
      • Other events organized by RTDS throughout the year.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • No professional work experience required.
  • Field of study must be closely related to the internship applied for.
  • Applicants must be:
    • A student in the final year of a bachelor’s program, master’s, or Ph.D., or
    • Have completed a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. program.
  • Official certificate must be provided at a later stage.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage.
  • Official UN languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish.

Intern Specific Text

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN.
  • Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or sponsoring institutions.
  • Non-citizens or non-permanent residents may require appropriate visas and work/employment authorization.
  • Successful candidates should confirm specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
