Intern: Environmental Law Specialist

Work Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Expected duration: 6 months

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the world’s leading environmental authority, setting the global environmental agenda, advancing the environmental dimension of sustainable development, and advocating for the protection of the global environment.

This position is based in UNEP’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP) in Bangkok, Thailand.

Under the overall supervision of the Regional Director and direct supervision of the Regional Coordinator for Environmental Governance and Law Subprogramme, the intern will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

1. Support the implementation of and reporting on the Programme of Work under the environmental governance subprogramme.
2. Support the Asia Pacific regional office to undertake activities on environmental governance including support for regional intergovernmental forums and programmes.
3. Assist in the provision of technical assistance to countries in the field of environmental law.
4. Undertake background research on environmental law and rights issues in the Asia-Pacific region, including case studies and best practices.
5. Assist in drafting reports and other documents related to environmental law and rights activities.
6. Support the implementation of the UNEP Asia Pacific Staff Capacity Building Plan for Gender Equality and Human Rights phase II (2024-2027).
7. Support the coordination of meetings, workshops, and conferences with stakeholders.
8. Prepare communication materials, such as quarterly newsletters, social media posts, and presentations, to raise awareness about environmental law and governance.
9. Participate, as appropriate, in relevant UN networks in the fields of environmental rights, law and governance.
10. Assist in monitoring and evaluating the progress of environmental law and rights initiatives, including data collection, analysis and annual progress reporting.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

• (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
• (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Applicants must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated (within 1 year) from Master’s, or Ph.D. programme with a focus on Environmental Governance and Law or related area. Prior experience in Environmental Governance and Law would be an advantage.

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
