Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.
The overall objective of the Industry and Economy Division of UNEP is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies, practices and technologies that:
It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.
The Sustainable Mobility Unit (SMU) is part of the Industry and Economy Division and promotes sustainable, low- and zero-emission transport solutions globally. UNEP’s SMU seeks to engage a Communications and Social Media Intern for a period of six (6) months to support the communication, visibility, and social media outreach of the Unit’s work, including global programmes, country projects, campaigns, knowledge products, and events.
The intern will assist in developing digital content, managing social media channels, drafting communications materials, supporting the preparation of the Unit’s newsletter, and strengthening the Unit’s online presence and stakeholder engagement.
Under the supervision of the Programme Manager, the Intern will undertake the following tasks in support of the Sustainable Mobility Unit (SMU):

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage.
Applicants should have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.
NOTE: “Fluency” equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.
