Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

This internship is for one (1) candidate who will intern in the Guided Tours Unit (GTU), Visitors Services Section.

The Visitors Services Section, part of the Outreach Division, Department of Global Communications in New York City, engages and educates global audiences to foster support for the UN’s work. It manages:

  • Guided tours of UN Headquarters,
  • Briefings with UN expert speakers, and
  • A Public Inquiries counter for information services.

Under the supervision of a staff member in the Visitors Services Section, interns may assist with:

  • Outreach and education:
  • Planning and organizing outreach activities to educate the public about the UN’s work.
  • Operational support:
  • Supporting guided tours, briefings, and events.
  • Providing general office support (drafting correspondence, maintaining files/records/databases, organizing meetings, etc.).
  • Research and content creation:
  • Conducting research on UN thematic issues.
  • Drafting media content for Visitors Services’ Facebook and Twitter accounts.
  • Assisting with development, implementation, and analysis of visitor surveys.
  • Multimedia support:
  • Assisting with photography and video production for promotion.
  • Visitor engagement:
  • Responding to visitors’ queries in-person and in writing.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications / Special Skills

Applicants must meet one of the following academic requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent), or
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).

Additional requirements:

  • Field of study must be related to the type of internship.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications (MS Word, MS PowerPoint) is required.
  • Ability to draft short articles/social media posts is desirable.
  • Photography and video skills, including basic editing/retouching, are desirable.
Languages
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
