Duties and Responsibilities
The Universal Postal Union (UPU) is a specialized agency of the United Nations and the principal forum for cooperation between postal sector stakeholders.
UPU has 192 member countries and its headquarters in Bern.
Its primary objective is to encourage the provision of quality postal services accessible to all.
Core mission: develop social, cultural, and commercial communication between peoples.
UPU comprises several bodies, including the Postal Operations Council (POC), made up of 48 member countries, which:
Considers operational and technical matters of interest to the postal service.
Promotes the introduction of new postal products.
Establishes standards for technological, operational, or other processes and oversees their implementation.
Through its addressing activities, UPU aims to be the international focal point for postal addresses worldwide, for member countries as well as regional and international partners.
UPU assists member countries to develop and improve addressing and postcode systems, aiming to improve global address infrastructure through cutting-edge technologies.
Provides technical assistance in:
Physical addresses
National addressing standards
Postcodes
Postal databases
Geographic information systems integration
Qualifications/Special Skills
Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS)
Experience with online mapping tools (e.g., Leaflet, Mapbox, ESRI StoryMaps)
Knowledge of Spatial Data Infrastructures
Knowledge of statistics and geospatial analysis; proficiency in Python is highly desirable
Completed bachelor’s or preferably master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., earth, environmental, or geospatial sciences)
Ability to work independently and in an organized manner
Strong analytical, communication, and presentation skills
Basic knowledge of financial markets is a plus
Field of study should relate closely to the internship: Geospatial studies, Geography, Digital Cartography, Data Engineering, or related studies with substantial GIS/cartography components
Proven interest in the United Nations and commitment to its ideals
Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs
Computer literacy in standard software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Proficiency in standard office automation (equipment, scanner, printer, etc.)
No professional experience required
Languages
French and English are the working languages of UPU.
Fluency in English (oral and written) is required.
Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French is an advantage.
