Job Description

Work Location

  • Geneva

Expected Duration

  • 3 months with possibility of extension up to 6 months maximum

Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Legal Officer, the intern will:

  • Assist in handling cases before the Management Evaluation Unit and UN Dispute Tribunal (UNDT)
  • Search for precedents, gather relevant documentation, and analyze the jurisprudence of the UNDT and the United Nations Appeals Tribunal (UNAT)
  • Perform research on a broad range of legal and policy questions related to human resources and Administrative Law
  • Assist in drafting routine correspondence
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Special Skills
Candidates must:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme in law (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme in law (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent)
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications including MS Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter
  • Demonstrate the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, including willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat
  • For this internship, fluency in English is required; knowledge of French is desirable

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization
  • Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer
