Expected Duration
6 months (15 July 2025 to 15 January 2026)

Duties and Responsibilities
The internship is based in the Housing and Land Management Unit of the Forests, Land and Housing Division at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva, Switzerland.

The UNECE Housing and Land Management Unit promotes:

  • Compact, inclusive, resilient, smart, and sustainable cities
  • Energy-efficient and affordable housing, especially for vulnerable populations
  • Transparent and efficient land use and property registration systems

The intern will support the UN4UkrainianCities project, which helps cities like Kharkiv and Mykolaiv build back better through collaboration with national and local authorities, civil society, and local experts. The intern may also contribute to the following initiatives:

  • Empowering Bishkek Stakeholders for Sustainable Development
  • Urban Economic Resilience for Inclusive Response and Recovery from Crises (UNDA 16th Tranche Project)

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the intern will:

  • Support planning, organizing, and delivering meetings and workshops, including compiling background information, preparing papers, and creating presentations
  • Draft and refine concept notes for urban planning, urban design, urban innovation, and public space initiatives
  • Support the review of deliverables from implementing partners to ensure compliance with agreed urban planning and design standards
  • Prepare analytical presentations and briefing papers, converting findings into graphics, schematics, and data-driven visuals
  • Work with urban data, producing evidence-based outputs from spatial and non-spatial databases
  • Assist with logistical and organizational tasks for meetings and workshops
  • Draft, review, and edit documents, reports, and web content; conduct relevant research
  • Maintain and update content on UNECE online platforms and project websites
  • Perform other tasks as required by the secretariat

Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
  • Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent)

Other requirements:

  • Field of study must be relevant to the internship
  • Ability to provide official proof of enrollment or graduation if selected
  • Proficiency in standard software applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams)
  • Desirable: knowledge of Adobe software (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), GIS platforms, and 2D/3D design tools

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage
  • Knowledge of Ukrainian is desirable

Additional Information

  • Interns are not financially compensated by the United Nations
  • Interns are responsible for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the host country must obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization
  • Visa requirements must be clarified and secured prior to accepting the internship offer
