Duties and Responsibilities
ESCAP supports its members and associate members in leveraging space applications, geospatial information, and digital innovations to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Space Applications Section (SAS) focuses on the implementation of the Asia-Pacific Plan of Action on Space Applications for Sustainable Development (2018–2030) through:

  • Research and knowledge-sharing
  • Capacity-building and technical support
  • Intergovernmental discussions and regional practices

Key thematic areas include:

  • Monitoring drought from space
  • Integration of geospatial information for resilience building
  • Use of space and GIS to advance the Sustainable Development Goals

This internship is:

  • Located in the Space Applications Section (SAS), Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division, ESCAP
  • UNPAID and full-time (35 hours/week), conducted in-person in Bangkok
  • Supervised by the Chief of SAS and relevant officers
  • Open to applicants who can commit to a period of 3–6 months, with preference for longer durations

Intern responsibilities may include:

  • Contributing to the development and testing of geospatial tools
  • Assisting in developing and/or updating digital platforms and multimedia content
  • Supporting the implementation of capacity development projects
  • Assisting in developing needs assessment surveys, collecting user feedback, and contributing to training content on geospatial tools
  • Supporting team activities and day-to-day operational tasks

Qualifications/Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate program (Master’s or equivalent)
  • Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent)

Additional requirements:

  • Field of study must be relevant to the internship
  • Must submit proof of enrollment or graduation
  • Proficiency in:
    • Microsoft Office 365
    • Google Earth Engine
    • Image processing and presentation software
  • Desirable: Experience with programming and open-source Earth observation tools/software

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish)

Intern-Specific Information

  • Interns are not financially remunerated
  • Interns are responsible for:
    • Travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses
    • Securing appropriate visa and work authorization if required
  • Successful candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting the offer
