Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Legal Team in the Office of the Director-General of UNOV/Executive Director of UNODC is hiring an intern at the UNOV and UNODC headquarters in Vienna, Austria, by mid-October 2025.
  • Seeking a highly motivated graduate or final-year undergraduate law student.
  • Opportunity to gain professional experience within the legal office of an international organization.
  • Provides practical and educational experience in a multicultural intergovernmental organization.
  • Supervised by the Senior Legal Advisor of UNOV and UNODC.
  • Tasks may include:
    • Reviewing legal documents, including Service Level Agreements on technical cooperation projects with Member States
    • Assisting in the compilation of a register of issues related to UN privileges and immunities and host country agreements
    • Supporting the review of host country agreements
    • Conducting legal research on issues related to international law and other areas of specialization using multiple research resources
  • Opportunity to apply and further develop theoretical and practical knowledge of International Public Law and the UN legal and administrative framework.
  • Internship is unpaid and full-time, five days per week (40 hours).

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in or recently completed a graduate programme (second university degree or higher)
    • Enrolled in or recently completed the final year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent)
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience.
  • Field of study should be closely related to the internship.
  • Must provide proof of enrollment or completion of the relevant degree.
  • Required skills:
    • Good drafting skills
    • Demonstrable experience in legal research and analysis
    • Excellent communication skills (desirable)
    • Publications in public international law, human rights law, international humanitarian law, or law of international organizations (desirable)

Intern-Specific Information

  • Internship is not financially remunerated.
  • Travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
  • Non-citizens or non-permanent residents may need to obtain appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
  • Successful candidates should discuss visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
