Expected Duration

  • 6 months
  • Desired start date: 24 November 2025 or earlier

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The internship duration is six (6) months, and it is unpaid.
  • It may be full-time (35 hours/week) or part-time (20 hours/week).
  • The internship may be conducted remotely, in a hybrid format, or in-person at the UN Premises in New York, United States.
  • Interns will work under the supervision of the Public Information Officer, Strategic Communications Section (SCS), Department of Peace Operations (DPO).

About the Department of Peace Operations (DPO):

  • DPO serves as a center of excellence for peace operations, leading efforts to prevent, respond to, and manage conflict and sustain peace in countries where UN peace operations are deployed.
  • It also supports other UN entities on peace and security issues.

About the Strategic Communications Section:

  • The SCS strengthens communication and media relations for UN Peacekeeping, in line with its mandate to enhance public outreach and media engagement.
  • The intern will assist in drafting media responses, developing key messages, supporting press briefings, and creating multimedia and digital content for peacekeeping communication campaigns.
  • Tasks will also include supporting public events, drafting publications, monitoring media trends, and generating creative ideas for communication products.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Support the Strategic Communications Section in media relations and public outreach, including:
    • Drafting responses to media inquiries and key messages.
    • Assisting in sourcing content for the daily press briefing by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General.
  • Assist in developing design, multimedia products, and stories for digital platforms such as the UN Peacekeeping website, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, Medium, and Instagram.
  • Draft and edit UN Peacekeeping publications, including fact sheets, brochures, newsletters, correspondence, pitches, and donor updates.
  • Support planning and implementation of campaigns and events (e.g., exhibitions, high-level meetings, screenings, workshops).
  • Monitor media coverage and trends, prepare internal daily media monitoring reports, and provide analysis to inform communications strategy.
  • Contribute creative ideas for projects and media stories that promote UN Peacekeeping’s work and strengthen public understanding.
  • Perform other related duties as requested by the supervisor.

Qualifications and Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following educational requirements:

  • (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).

Additional requirements:

  • No professional work experience is required, but the field of study must be closely related to the internship.
  • Proof of enrolment or completion must be submitted with the application.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and familiarity with standard office equipment (scanner, printer, etc.) are required.
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural communication skills are essential, with openness to diverse perspectives.
  • Training or coursework in communications, event planning, or public relations is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an advantage.

Restrictions:

  • Applicants who have previously served six months in total as a UN intern (across any UN entity) cannot be re-engaged.
  • Applicants who are children, siblings, or in-laws (including step-relatives) of active UN staff members are ineligible.

Internship Conditions

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Interns who are not citizens or residents of the country where the internship takes place must obtain the appropriate visa or work authorization.
  • Successful candidates should confirm visa and work requirements before accepting the offer.
