Job Description

Internship – Peace and Security Data Hub, UN Headquarters, New York

Work Location

  • In-person at United Nations Headquarters, New York, USA

Expected Duration

  • 4–6 months
  • Desired start date: 17 February 2025, or sooner

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Full-time internship (35 hours/week), unpaid, designed to be in-person but may be adjusted to part-time (20 hours/week) or remote based on needs.
  • Located in the Information Management Unit (IMU) within the Department of Peace Operations (DPO).
  • Support DPO’s mission in peacekeeping and DPPA’s mandate in international peace and security.
  • Contribute to projects within the Peace and Security Data Hub, supporting analysis, solutions development, and advisory services.

Two Intern Profiles:

  • Strategic/Policy-Focused Interns
    • Experience in Political, Human Rights, or Humanitarian Affairs.
    • Background in client-facing, user-centric design processes.
    • Contribute to shaping the data ecosystem that supports peace and security operations.
    • Demonstrated interest in organizational change and digital transformation.
  • Technical/GenAI-Focused Interns
    • Support experimentation and deployment of GenAI solutions for projects.
    • Automate routine tasks, optimize procedures, and use advanced data analytics to address core business problems.
    • Required technical skills: scripting, data automation, process optimization.
    • Contribute to sustainable improvements in the team and wider peace and security data ecosystem.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in, or completed, a graduate program (Master’s or higher)
    • Enrolled in, or completed, the final year of a Bachelor’s program or equivalent
  • Field of study should be closely related to the internship focus.
  • Desired qualifications:
    • Actively seeks to apply emerging technology across tasks
    • Keeps abreast of available technology and its organizational applicability
    • Experience or interest in self-service analytical tools (MS Power BI, Tableau)
    • Experience or interest in citizen development solutions (MS Power Apps)
    • Experience or interest in relational databases (SQL Server)

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required
  • Knowledge of an additional UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an advantage
