Job Description

Work Location

  • Hybrid: a few days per week in-person in New York, USA, and a few days per week remote

Expected Duration

  • 3–6 months
  • Desired start date: 1 December 2025 or sooner

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the work of the Northern Africa Division (NAD) within the joint regional structure of DPPA and DPO.
  • Monitor and report on major developments in Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia, and Western Sahara.
  • Recommend actions to address challenges, risks, and threats in the region.
  • Provide headquarters support to:
    • MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara)
    • OPESG (Office of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Western Sahara)
    • UNSMIL (United Nations Support Mission in Libya)
  • Perform the following tasks under the supervision of a Political Affairs Officer:
    • Monitor and analyze key political and security developments, including those related to field mission mandates.
    • Contribute to reporting using situation reports, press clippings, and media reports.
    • Undertake social media monitoring.
    • Summarize key public and academic articles, and correspondence related to Division files.
    • Assist in preparation of communication materials, including presentations.
    • Participate in meetings and draft minutes or summaries.
    • Conduct individual research assignments and contribute to briefing materials.
    • Support the Division’s innovation mainstreaming initiatives.
    • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or higher).
  • Field of study must be closely related to the internship applied for.
  • Students in final year of Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. programs or graduates are eligible. Proof of enrollment or graduation is required.
  • Good knowledge of MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
  • Ability to undertake political analysis.
  • Ability to summarize news articles and social media posts is desirable.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of Arabic or French is desirable.
