The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) coordinates UN efforts to reduce disaster risks and ensures synergies among disaster reduction activities in both developed and developing countries.
UNDRR is led by the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG) and has over 150 staff in Geneva headquarters and regional offices.
The office monitors, analyses, and reports progress on the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation, and catalyzes action to raise global awareness.
The internship is full-time, unpaid, in-person, and reports to the Programme Management Officer in the UNDRR Interagency Cooperation Unit under the supervision of the Head of Unit.
Internship Responsibilities
Assist in drafting and preparing background documents, reports, issue briefs, talking points, articles, presentations, and meeting minutes.
Support organization of meetings, workshops, side events, and engagement with UN system partners and interagency partnerships.
Provide logistical and administrative support during virtual, hybrid, and in-person meetings and conferences.
Collect and systematize information on disaster risk reduction (DRR) practices and sustainable development issues; prepare briefing notes based on data analysis, including support from AI tools.
Support outreach and research activities related to DRR topics, including linkages with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and risk-informed UN planning at the country level.
Assist in policy development and preparation of written outputs such as draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports, talking points, and speeches.
Maintain databases, UNDRR partner workspace content, websites, and mailing lists.
Support knowledge management activities, development of communications products, and maintenance of the UN Plan of Action on DRR for Resilience Multimedia Page.
Qualifications/Special Skills
Must meet one of the following:
Enrolled in, or completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or higher).
Enrolled in, or completed, the final year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level).
Degree should be in areas related to the internship focus.
Computer literate in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Demonstrated interest in UN work and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, showing tolerance and understanding.
No prior work experience required; education, training, or skills should contribute to the UN during the internship.
Knowledge of design software such as Canva and Adobe InDesign is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in English is required.
Knowledge of additional official UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an asset.
