Duties and Responsibilities
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. It is composed of 15 judges elected by the General Assembly and the Security Council.
The Court’s roles are:
- To settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States; and
- To provide advisory opinions on legal questions referred by duly authorized UN organs and specialized agencies.
The Court is the only principal UN organ not serviced by the Secretariat. Its administrative and judicial support functions are carried out by its own Registry, headed by a Registrar elected by the Court.
The Information Department, part of the Registry, ensures that ICJ proceedings are accessible to key audiences (diplomatic corps, media, academia, and the public) and promotes understanding of the Court’s role and activities.
This internship offers students and young professionals an opportunity to apply their knowledge and gain experience in an international environment.
Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Information Department, the intern will support various activities of the Department, including:
- Organizing public sittings, special events, high-profile visits, and outreach activities.
- Assisting in the organization of events related to the 80th anniversary of the Court.
- Developing a social media content calendar, drafting posts for social media platforms, and compiling analytical data.
- Drafting website content and providing input for multimedia projects.
- Researching content and compiling statistics on Court activities for printed and online materials.
- Drafting presentations, reports, and other written materials.
- Contributing to daily media monitoring.
- Organizing the department’s photo database and archive.
- Assisting with the maintenance of the diplomatic mailing list and performing daily administrative tasks.
Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Completed or enrolled in the final year of a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in journalism, communications, public relations, international law, or international relations.
- Enrollment in or recent completion of a Master’s degree in the same fields will be considered an advantage.
- Experience in a multicultural environment is desirable.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.
- Excellent communication, writing, and editing skills.
- Strong research and drafting abilities.
- Basic knowledge of the United Nations, international law, and the ICJ is an asset.
- Practical experience relevant to the department’s work will be considered an advantage.
Languages
- English and French are the official and working languages of the ICJ.
- Good command of either English or French is required.
- Knowledge of the other language is an asset.
- Knowledge of other UN official languages or Dutch is desirable.

Internship Conditions
- Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
- Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
- Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the host country may need to obtain the appropriate visa and work authorization.
- Successful candidates should confirm visa requirements before accepting the offer.
