Job Description

Democracy International (DI) is seeking to hire multiple regional Justice and Human Rights Analysts (STTA/LTTA) in a consultant role to support the implementation of the Justice, Rights, and Security – Rapid Response Assistance (JURIS) activity. With growing threats against the rule of law, human rights, and security around the world, the $20 million, multiyear JURIS activity will support short-term, rapid-response activities to address critical, time-sensitive concerns and windows of opportunity. DI’s global coalition of expert, dynamic partner organizations consists of The Carter Center, FHI 360, TAG International, Pan American Development Foundation, The Asia Foundation, Proximity, The Sentinel Project, GeoPoll, Humanity & Inclusion, Physicians for Human Rights, and Ropes & Gray. This will be a remote Consultancy and this Consultancy is open to US and non US citizens.


About the opportunity:

DI seeks consultants from civil society in the Asia-Pacific, Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa to support the strategic direction of JURIS and promote the responsiveness of the program to local needs. Depending on need and specialization, Regional Analysts may be asked to provide support on short notice to individual rapid response activities or in recurring analysis needs of the program. Illustrative support could include:
  • Rapid, on-demand analysis of key justice, human rights, and security topics related to program interventions based on desk research, outreach, and personal networks
  • Routine analysis on regional trends, including identifying urgent needs or windows of opportunities related to justice, human rights, and security that could be impacted positively with targeted programming.
  • Analysis of political, economic, and cultural dynamics in select countries or regions as relevant to specific JURIS interventions
  • Stakeholder mapping, particularly within and among both formal and informal civil society, including non-governmental organizations, media, academics, individual human rights defenders, and grassroots/community organizers
  • Contributing to intervention design, strategic planning, scenario planning, and risk discussions
  • Conducting outreach to and facilitating connections with potential stakeholders and partners
  • Supporting implementation of individual JURIS interventions


Desired experience:

  • Past or current experience working within a civil society organization and/or as a human rights defender in in the Asia-Pacific, Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Strong knowledge of and connections with civil society in the region and/or sub-region of experience (e.g. Francophone Africa)
  • Strong analytical skills and political acumen and a demonstrated background in justice, rule of law, human rights, conflict, peacebuilding, and/or security
  • English language fluency and local language skills, particularly Arabic, French, Spanish, and Russian.
