Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the Americas Division, DPPA-DPO at UN Headquarters, New York.
  • Assist DPPA’s work on Indigenous Peoples’ engagement in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and early warning processes.
  • Attend and provide analytical notes on conferences and meetings, including the 25th UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (April 2026).
  • Draft thematic papers, briefing materials, profiles, and correspondence.
  • Conduct research on Indigenous conflict methodologies and Indigenous peacebuilding.
  • Perform media monitoring and analysis of relevant events.
  • Assist in the organization of meetings.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Fields of study: Political Science, International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, International Law (especially human rights and sustainable development), Indigenous Studies, Anthropology, or related fields.
  • Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or higher).
    • Enrolled in the final year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s).
    • Graduated with a university degree and commence the internship within one year of graduation.
  • No professional work experience is required.

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish).

Additional Information

  • The UN Secretariat aims for 50/50 gender balance and geographical diversity; female candidates are strongly encouraged.
  • The internship is UNPAID. Costs for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or sponsoring institutions.
  • Visa and work authorization requirements depend on the country of the internship.
  • Applicants who have already served six months as a UN intern cannot be re-engaged.
  • Applicants related to active UN staff (children, siblings, in-laws) are not eligible.
