Job Description

Chemonics is seeking a Senior Specialist, Communications and Design, to work closely with staff, leadership, and communications stakeholders in Chemonics’ Health and Supply Chain (HSC) Business Line. A strong writer with sound judgment and the ability to think creatively, the senior specialist promotes Chemonics’ global health and supply chain communications objectives by supporting internal and external communications and outreach efforts. The senior specialist writes high-quality content ensuring adherence to USAID and Chemonics’ Style Guide, tools, and templates; supports our external outreach goals by pitching our work to external news outlets and publications; and promotes our work on social media and through various mediums such as blogs, videos, and podcasts. S/he supports other strategic corporate and project initiatives as needed, including ad hoc communications support to our projects. The senior specialist may supervise or mentor associates and/or interns. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads communication and outreach initiatives and planning, under the mentorship of a director, that increases visibility of Chemonics’ global health and supply chain work.
  • Ensures project and divisional goals and strategies are integrated into communications activities and plans.
  • Facilitates and manages corporate partnerships with think tanks to ensure Chemonics is participating in and contributing effectively to the complex challenges in the global health and supply chain sectors.
  • Identifies opportunities for advancing Chemonics’ mission and thought leadership through op-eds, blogging, tweeting, and other social networking opportunities.
  • Supports outreach efforts to legislative contacts on Capitol Hill (i.e., Congressional staffers, members, and committees) and media outlets related to global health and supply chain, including representing Chemonics at industry events and briefings.
  • Supports the director in developing communication materials, testimony (with technical expert input), talking points, FAQs, and trainings and insights for engaging with policy and industry stakeholders on matters related to global health and supply chains.
  • Monitors media to build, maintain, and defend the reputation of the organization. Works closely with the director to respond to all media inquiries related to our global health and supply chain work, and establishes, develops, and maintains contacts with media.
  • Supports development and tracking of metrics and success criteria for communications campaigns and activities.
  • Interviews executives and senior technical experts for the purpose of creating content for external audiences.
  • Designs and delivers communications-related trainings to home and field office staff.
  • Conducts short-term communications assignments to support projects with communications planning and strategy, reporting, and other implementation activities, as needed.
  • Supports new business efforts throughout the company.
  • Mentors and may supervise associates, consultants, and/or interns.
  • Fosters and demonstrates a workplace inclusive of creating opportunity, serving others, building trust, innovating, and exceeding expectations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in communications, marketing, international development, or related field.
  • Minimum five to seven years of experience in strategic communications, knowledge management, public relations, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience writing story-driven content about complex technical subjects in a variety of formats (e.g., newsletters, success stories, news stories, op-eds/blogs, videos, photo essays, podcasts, one-pagers).
  • Sensitivity to diverse audiences and demonstrated good judgment about messaging.
  • Passionate, results-driven, and organized, with an attention to detail. A self-starter—with the ability to work independently and in ambiguous and changing environments—who can create and deliver strategic communications plans, including an ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and think creatively.
  • Demonstrated experience in media, legislative affairs, policy issues, and/or Capitol Hill experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated integrity, independent thinking, judgment, and respect for others, with strong interpersonal communications skills enabling the individual to work with people at all levels internally and externally and around the world.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, and lead presentations and effective meetings.
  • Experience in international development and understanding and knowledge of USAID preferred.
  • Experience in creating digital strategies and managing content for social media.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (required), Adobe Photoshop (desired), Adobe Premiere and/or After Effects, or other video editing software (preferred but not required).
  • Willingness to travel and work abroad a minimum of 4-8 weeks per year.
  • Fluent English required; proficiency in a second language (French, Spanish, Portuguese) preferred.
