ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Internews seeks a Social Media Associate to enhance our presence on social media and other digital venues. The ideal candidate will have experience using social media to support advocacy, press outreach and thought leadership positioning. You’ll identify ways to “hook” Internews’ work to key real-time conversations online, developing graphics and copy that are on brand, true to voice and engage broad audiences. You will also closely track key thought leaders and reporters on topics relevant to Internews and engage them directly. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the person in this position will aid the broader communications team with other tasks, including story writing and creating content in multi-media formats, such as social media stories, videos and podcasts.

LOGISTICS

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Internews’ headquarters and global offices are open on a limited basis. Preferably, this position will be “based” in our Washington, DC office, with the option to work remotely 2-3 days per week. However, candidates based elsewhere in the US will also be considered. This position is not eligible for relocation assistance, and you must have work authorization in your location that does not require sponsorship from Internews.

DAY-TO-DAY TASKS will include:

  • Manage all of Internews’ social media accounts, including the accounts for FilmAid, an exciting new project of Internews;
  • Draft and schedule social media content aligned with the organization’s strategy and campaign calendar;
  • Assist with the development of social media campaigns surrounding publications and special events;
  • Write, co-write and edit blogs for the Internews website, in coordination with the communications team;
  • Monitor the news cycle and relevant online conversations to identify “hooks” for Internews’ work and thought leadership;
  • Identify, track, and engage (through direct messaging) key reporters and thought leaders on key topics;
  • Assist teams across the organization in running live social media events including live tweeting;
  • Design digital graphics, images, and video and/or work with Internews’ in-house designer to create them;
  • Assist the communications team with other tasks, including story boarding/writing and creating multimedia content, such as short videos and podcasts;
  • Understand and demonstrate commitment to upholding Internews’ Core Values; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Superior portfolio of diverse mediums including design, photo, video and more
  • 1-3 years of experience in social and digital media marketing roles
  • Comfortable using a wide range of digital tools, from social media managers (Tweet Deck), content management systems (WordPress), email marketing tools (Constant Contact, MailChimp, MyEmma)
  • Experience using social media to directly engage “narrow cast” audiences, including thought leaders and reporters
  • Extraordinary attention to detail and strong writing skills
  • Experience with digital design tools (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Experience creating videos for social media and podcast production a plus
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse staff
  • Professional-level fluency in English

Anticipated salary for this position: $43,000 - $45,000 per annum based on non-exempt, hourly rate
