Duties and Responsibilities

  • This internship is UNPAID, designed to be in-person and full-time (35 hours per week) at the United Nations premises in New York, USA.
  • Internship can be adjusted to part-time (20 hours per week) and/or remote, depending on candidate needs.
  • Duration:
    • Full-time: Initial period of 2 months
    • Part-time: Initial period of 4 months
    • Internship may extend up to 6 months based on Division needs
  • Hosted in the Strategic Force Generation and Capability Planning Cell, part of the Policy and Best Practices Service (PBPS), Division of Policy, Evaluation and Training (DEPT), Department of Peace Operations (DPO)
  • Division Mandate (DPET):
    • Develop and disseminate policies and doctrine for Peacekeeping Operations
    • Evaluate policy application and gather lessons learned and best practices
    • Guide development, coordination, and delivery of standardized training
    • Maintain strategic cooperation with UN and external partners
  • Policy and Best Practices Service (PBPS):
    • Supports DPO and DOS
    • Improves efficiency and effectiveness of peacekeeping operations through good practice exchange
    • Develops guidance materials reflecting lessons learned
    • Provides thematic policy support and leads reform processes
  • Intern Responsibilities:
    • Assist in research on Strategic Force Generation and Capability Planning issues
    • Support statistical analysis and data extraction
    • Review policies, papers, and other documents/materials
    • Prepare reports, concept papers, policy documents, talking points, articles, and other materials
    • Attend and take notes at conferences and meetings
    • Assist in servicing conferences and meetings
    • Maintain and manage databases
    • Support project management development
    • Assist in developing a pilot programme for language training
    • Edit and create content for digital learning products or translation
    • Assist in data collection, analysis, and information management
    • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in, or completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or higher)
    • Enrolled in, or completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent)
  • Field of study must be closely related to the internship applied for
  • Applicants must provide proof of enrollment or completion
  • Applicants must be able to cover travel, visa, accommodation, health insurance, and living expenses
  • Experience in organizing meetings and workshops is desirable
  • Experience with Project Management is desirable
  • Family restrictions: Applicants cannot be immediate family of UN staff (parents, siblings, children, step-relations)

Languages

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required
  • Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage
  • Official UN languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the UN
  • Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution
  • Interns not citizens or permanent residents of the internship country may require the appropriate visa and work authorization
