Job Description

The Senior Associate Director assists the Vice President for Peace Programs in the management of Peace Programs operations and strategy. The senior associate director will coordinate cross-programmatic initiatives in peace programs, and program-wide initiatives such as budgeting, planning, and strategy development. The senior associate director will also play an integral role in leading strategic growth initiatives in the Office of the Vice President by coordinating fundraising and communication efforts and supporting and
participating in key partnerships and events to elevate The Carter Center’s global eminence. Tasks include assisting in cross-program design, development, implementation, and evaluation; fundraising and pipeline development; budget planning; program promotion; networking and negotiating. Incumbent will supervise staff, interns, and volunteers and may represent the Vice President for Peace Programs at internal and external events and meetings. Due to the travel locations, Hostile Environment
Awareness Training (HEAT) will be required.

FORMAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Assumes a senior role in the planning, development, and implementation of various aspects of a complex global program.
  • Serves as a liaison and key spokesperson to various committees and organizations. Leads policy formulation, strategy development, and management of daily operations.
  • Collaborates with representatives from private, government, and international agencies to design, implement and/or evaluate program-related projects and strategies that effectively address the public needs associated with the program.
  • Conducts research, designs new initiatives, and writes publishable articles and papers.
  • May write grant proposals, and prepare/present associated reports to funding organizations and to clients.
  • May engage in fundraising initiatives on behalf of the program.
  • May oversee the annual budget and other financial aspects of the program.
  • May supervise staff. Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in a field related to the program and seven years of professional experience related to the program and previous supervisory and program/project management experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-graduate degree in conflict resolution, international relations,
    international development, area studies, international law, or related fields.
  • At least five years should reflect experience in peace, democracy, human rights,
    rule of law, or related field at a senior level.
  • Incumbent should be detail oriented and well organized, assertively following and bringing activities to closure.
  • Experience building relationships with key partners such as funders,
    think tanks, and universities preferred.
  • A high level of personal energy and positive attitude are essential.
  • Strong writing and communication skills and competence with personal computer applications are musts.
  • Familiarity with NGOs, US Government fundraising, and strategic planning is advantageous.
  • Foreign language skills are preferable.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to The Carter Center on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines. The Carter Center reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to the employee.
