Duration: 5 months (fixed start date: 1st March 2026)

(With possible extension up to 6 months if required by University)

Objective of the traineeship

The objective of the traineeship is to support the Central and South East European (CSEE) public sector lending team in:

  • Identification of new financing opportunities in the CSEE countries (Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia) by undertaking initial screening of non-sovereign entities (in particular public companies, municipalities and municipally owned entities). It is expected that the trainee will closely follow the market, analyse the available financial and investment information and prepare reports with a view to determining the potential of the counterparts for EIB financing.
  • Support the Loan Officers in the analytical work related to financial and credit assessment of counterparts, which includes analysis of financial data (e.g. budgets, financial statements) and preparation of the financial reports and projections.
  • Gather, record and maintain in a structured format market and client information for origination purposes.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Head of Division and Loan Officer(s) you will actively participate in the Division’s core activities. Your main tasks will be:

  • Gathering and analysing relevant information on the public sector market in the CSEE region.
  • Providing analytical support for the counterparts’ financial and credit assessment.
  • Recording and maintaining data pertinent to counterparts and specific sectors of interest.
  • Contributing to promotional documentation, such as presentations and briefings, to support the EIB lending activities in the region.

Academic qualifications and professional skills

  • Final year of studies or University degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or a related field, preferably from an education institution from the CSEE region.
  • Strong ability to gather, interpret, and analyse market and financial information, including budgets and financial statements of local authorities and publicly owned companies.
  • Prior exposure to market research, financial analysis, or credit assessment—particularly from a lender’s perspective—would be considered an advantage.
  • Familiarity with public-sector markets in the CSEE countries would be a strong asset.
  • Excellent knowledge of standard Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word); familiarity with financial modeling or data analysis tools would be an asset.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of one or more CSEE languages is a distinct advantage.
